Otaru's Micro-Brewed Sake

Sake or rice wine is produced in various regions in Japan, like every region has wine or cheese of its own in France. There used to be about forty micro-brewed sake breweries in Otaru Hokkaido, but only four of them remain at the moment.

Takana Sake Brewery is one of them. Its history dates back to 1899. At Kikko-gura, built in 1899 in Nobuka, you can see the process of sake brewing in the original brewery building of stone construction. Renovated main shop, initially built in 1927, in Ironai is like a small museum to show how the shop in the days of startup was like.

Thirsty Soul, Fine Soul Music Bar

If you like soul music, "Thirsty Soul" is the right place to visit. You can enjoy soul music and drinks in a cozy atmosphere created by the old-established building built in Taisho Period (1912-1926) and modern interior design.

What I found by Former Temiya Line

old buildings along the upper side of former Temiya lineThe street along the upper side of former Temiya line that is abolished railway in Otaru Hokkaido is an interesting area. There is a series of old buildings of low eaves that used be pubs or bars many years ago.

The shop, maybe bistro, in the photo got into my eyes over the small alley between some of those small buildings. There are some things that you can pass over unless you are walking at leisure.

Deepening autumn

Autumn tints are at closing stage in Otaru, Hokkaido. Autumn is another colorful season of the year after flowery spring. We have a special feeling on this brilliant autumn leaves period, as the world will be like a monochrome drawing being blanketed with snow soon.

You can come across the scene like in the photo while rambling in Otaru at this time of year.

Myoken Marche

Myoken Marché may be the smallest bakery in Otaru, Hokkaido. It is in Myoken Market that was once a thriving market in Otaru. The market does not have the bustle of old days any more, and only several shops keep up their business, but they are still popular with some customers.
